Book Cover Redesign

My Design Process

Tennessee Williams’ playwright A Streetcar Named Desire, follows Blanche Dubois as she moves in with her sister, Stella and her brutish husband Stanley, in their New Orleans apartment. The story displays hardships such as grief, domestic abuse, unhealthy obsession, betrayal, death, homophobia, alcoholism, and wealth.

In my design process I wanted to create a timeless, simple, and bold cover. The beautiful typeface for the title with the eerie purple background summarizes the play’s concept. The characters appear happy and beautiful, yet there is a background of hate and abuse that looms over them. I made the frame from the design of New Orleans railings to include the setting of the play. Lastly, purple is the color for domestic abuse; therefore, my color choice was to display Stanley’s relationship with the two sisters.
